Who is Amigo Energy?

Amigo Energy is one of the largest REPs in the state of Texas, and they provide electricity to nearly 2 million customers in North America. Like many other energy companies, they're based in Houston and are also known as Tara Energy. Amigo was founded in 2003 and is a subsidiary of the power giant Just Energy Group, Inc.

What Types of Electricity Plans Does Amigo Energy Offer?

Amigo Energy offers home and business plans like many other energy companies. Whether you’re a renter, a homeowner, a small business owner, or a large business owner, Amigo likely has a plan that you'll qualify for. However, just because they have a plan available in your area doesn’t mean you should sign up for it willy-nilly.

Depending on where you live, you will have several hundred different energy plans to choose from. Amigo, for example, offers residential plans with fixed rates, options for free nights and weekends, and that use renewable resources. Here’s a breakdown of what a typical plan with Amigo Energy might look like.

Fixed-Rate Plans

The fixed-rate plans at Amigo Energy work the same way that most other fixed-rate plans do. You sign up for an electricity plan with a term of 12, 24, or 36 months, and the electricity rate you sign up at is the same rate you’ll keep for the duration of your contract. So, if you sign up for a 24-month electricity plan with a fixed rate of 12 cents/kWh, your rate won’t change for two years.

However, most fixed-rate plans have tiers and levels built into them. Although the rate you see when you sign up says 12 cents/kWh, this number is often based on 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Your rate will be much higher if you use less than 1,000 kWh or more than 2,000 kWh. Therefore, it’s vital to understand your energy usage and how much electricity your use each month so that you get the lowest rate possible.

Green Energy Plans

One of the top things that Amigo has going for them is the fact that they’re one of the greenest electricity companies in Texas. Their green energy plan uses electricity sourced from solar or wind power and is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint while keeping the lights on in your home.

Free Nights

Many electricity companies have started advertising plans that include free nights or weekends. Most free night electricity plans state that you can use unlimited electricity between 9 PM and 7 AM. While this sounds like a great deal, it’s only worth it if you’re a night owl because the rates are usually higher at other times of the day.

Is Amigo Energy Available in My Area?

Amigo Energy is available in most parts of Texas that have deregulated electricity. Larger cities worthy of note are Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, and their surrounding areas. Once again, however, it’s important to remember that while Amigo offers numerous electricity plans with perks, benefits, and decent rates, it doesn't mean they’re right for you.

Is Amigo Energy Right for Me?

Despite having some of the lowest electricity rates and prices in Texas, Amigo Energy also has some of the poorest reviews and company ratings. They’re currently listed as the 33rd best REP in Texas from qualifying companies and seem to have a customer satisfaction rating of just two out of five stars.

Their most common complaints have to do with their refusal to waive early termination fees, even though the specifics of your contract state that they should. Examples of this are if you’re a renter and your landlord unexpectedly changes your plan or if you move to a new area that doesn’t have Amigo Energy as an option.

Amigo also tends to score very low with their customer service, power outage responses, billings, and account management. Despite having some of the most competitive rates and prices, electricity with Amigo Energy comes at the price of reliability and transparency.
