What is Gexa Energy?
Gexa Energy is a retail electric provider (REP) that is based out of Houston, Texas. They’re a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources and NextEra Energy, which are energy conglomerates based in Florida. As an REP, Gexa Energy purchases electricity from power-generating plants and sells it to residential customers throughout Texas.
Something notable about Gexa Energy is that all of their electricity plans exclusively use green energy. Originally, Gexa offered electricity from renewable resources as an option. However, starting in 2019, Gexa became a 100% green energy company.
What Types of Electricity Plans Does Gexa Offer?
Depending on where you live in Texas, you might have access to between five and ten Gexa Energy plans. In comparison to other electricity providers, Gexa offers more plans than most, which can make it difficult to choose the right one. Gexa also tends to pack their plans with nitty-gritty details, and it can take a lot of work to catch all of them.
In general, however, Gexa Energy offers three types of electricity plans, all of which use 100% green energy.
Business Electricity Plans
If you own a commercial property or business of any sort, you are eligible for Gexa’s business electricity plans. You can cater your plan based on the size of your business, and Gexa does a good job of splitting them up between large and small business plans. Additionally, all of Gexa’s business plans are available exclusively with green energy, which is unusual for business plans.
Prepaid Electricity Plans
As is becoming more and more popular, Gexa Energy has jumped on the prepaid bandwagon and offer a month-to-month electricity option. Their prepaid plan, the Gexa Flex Plan, is a month-to-month plan that doesn’t require any commitment, down payment, credit check, or deposit. However, as with most prepaid plans, the rate is outlandishly high and you don’t have the security of a long-term contract.
Fixed-Rate Electricity Plans
Most of the electricity plans that Gexa offers are traditional fixed-rate plans. In all, Gexa has up to nine fixed-rate electricity plans to choose from. These plans range in time commitment from 12 to 36 months, and each of them is slightly different from the others. Many of their fixed-rate plans have the option of free nights, discounted thermostats, credit usages, and other perks.
Is Gexa Energy Available in My Area?
If you’re located in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, or any of the other major cities in Texas, there’s a good chance that Gexa is available to you. However, because of how extensive Gexa Energy is, they’re also available in a number of suburbs and rural areas throughout the state. The best way to find out if Gexa is available to you is to go to their website and enter your zip code into their database.
Pros and Cons of Gexa Energy
Pros

Multiple Plan Options
Gexa Energy also has a multitude of plans to choose from, which is good if you want options.
Cons
Their Plans are Overwhelming
While Gexa has tons of plans to choose from, they can very overwhelming. Rather than having straightforward, simple plans, Gexa Energy packs its plans with jargon that makes it tough to know which one is right for you.
Poor Customer Service
While Gexa is often thought of as a solid electricity provider, one of the biggest gripes against them has to do with poor customer service. And when it comes to reliable electricity, good customer service is paramount. The last thing you need is for your power provider to not have the answers when you call them about a power outage.
Their Plans are Pricy and Difficult to Understand
The biggest reason that you should think twice about choosing Gexa Energy is because of how their plans are structured. Gexa’s plans are fairly expensive, difficult to understand, and full of confusing language. Even their least expensive plan, which is based on using 1,000 kWh, has outlandishly high fees when you use too much or too little electricity. For some plans, your rate will double if you use the wrong amount of power.
It’s also up to you to dig into the nitty-gritty details of each plan so that you can choose the right one. GoodCharlie Energy, on the other hand, has simple, straightforward plans that are easy to understand. We also don’t have hidden rates or fees, and tiered rates within one to two cents of each other.
